The organisation of the sale of fish in the city can be traced back to the old Statutes of Pesaro from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Early in the nineteenth century the Municipality realised the need of a public building in which to sell a product of increasing importance in the city’s economy.

A plan for the fish market was approved in 1820 and assigned to the engineer Pompeo Mancini, (also responsible for the Orti Giuli). The building was completed over the three years from 1821-’23. The façade facing corso XI settembre stands against the seventeenth century church of the Suffraggio, now hardly recognisable, its front ruined by demolition.

In the single great interior space the wooden beams of the ceiling and the stone shell-shaped fountain in the end wall are still preserved. Since 1988, two Istria marble fountains – their missing parts restored – have stood on each side of the main entrance. On the whole, in its simple elegance this nineteenth century building has remained as it was: conceived on the basic plan of a pagan temple, the structural elements are evident, including the massive columns.

No longer used for its original purpose it has become an exhibition space. Since 1996 the Fish Market has been the Centre for Visual Arts, a municipal institution for the promotion of exhibitions of contemporary art and design. Since 2012 to June 2015 it was the Fondazione Pescheria - Centro Arti Visive (Fish Market Foundation – Visual Arts Centre).
