Palazzo Gradari

Palazzo Gradari
Cortile Palazzo Gradari

Building on this palazzo, designed by the architect Guidubaldo Del Monte, began in 1599. It was the prestigious residence of Giulio Cesare Mamiani Della Rovere, who had received the name of the Della Rovere family as an honour conferred by Duke Francesco Maria II, of whom he was both friend and advisor. On Mamiani’s death the wing in via Rossini -  still the same building - passed to his son Francesco Maria.

Over the years the palazzo passed through the hands of various patrician families: the Medici in 1693, the Gavardini, who were mainly responsible for most of the changes to the architectural complex, in 1698, the Reggiani, who imposed their coat of arms over the Renaissance portal in 1852, and finally the Gradari who passed the palazzo to the Municipality (Comune) in 1940.

The main courtyard beyond the great atrium has two orders of loggias on two sides and communicates with a small interior courtyard. The rooms on the first floor have gaily decorated vaulted ceilings. Among these are frescoes signed Giannandrea Lazzarini in 1747, of episodes from the Bible, The Four Seasons in stucco and four medallions depicting youths with classical and Christian symbols. The paintings on the second floor are views by the brothers Antonio and Romolo Liverani.

The palazzo now houses municipal offices, the headquarters of the Rossini Opera Festival and the Municipal Enoteca Rossini (Rossin wine cellar). The piano nobile is used for exhibitions, meetings and conferences; Marchesa Mosca’s gala berlin is exhibited on the ground floor.
