Villa Caprile

Villa Caprile

The villa was commissioned and built in 1640 by the marchese Giovanni Mosca as a summer residence for rest and amusement in the hills outside the city. The present complex is the result of subsequent work, the most interesting being Carlo Mosca Barzi’s additions in 1763, continued by his son Francesco. Carlo was also responsible for rebuilding the small chapel in elegant neoclassical style.

On the piano nobile are eight frescoes of mythological subjects by Cesare Begni (1579-1659), restored in 1797 by Ubaldo Geminiani, a pupil of Giannandrea Lazzarini.

The gardens follow the sweep of the hills along three terraces connected by steps. The first is a typical Italian garden with pools, flowerbeds and citrus trees, in which the water features already there before the eighteenth century refurbishment are still working, and were invented to surprise visitors on their arrival. The second terrace is an orchard of fruit trees, the third a herb garden. In the small eighteenth century open-air theatre there were, among others, representations of Arcadian Pesaro.

The villa was bought by the Accademia Agraria in 1876 for a school of practical agriculture, and was subsequently sold to the Province in 1925. It is still an agricultural college today: Istituto Tecnico Agrario ‘Antonio Cecchi’. During the summer season the open-air theatre is used for cultural events of various kinds.
