Borgo Santa Maria Library

The library is in the Quartiere 8 building. Areas in the library have been increased since November 2011. There are now two new rooms on the ground making access easier for the disabled, children and toddlers in pushchairs. In the area next to the reference point are now books for children and teenagers. The shelves of new fiction and reading recommended for adults have been reorganised and combined with a relaxation area, internet access for two and tables for study. The area for adults on the first floor includes essays and fiction, videos, the library archive and a second study area. The furnishings and fittings have also been renewed to meet the requirements of all users.

General information


The library and services are free.

The library owns 12,157 catalogued volumes (including 3,350 for children and adolescents); one daily newspaper: “Il Resto del Carlino”; 5 magazines (Bell’Italia, Pc Professional, Focus,  Art & Dossier, Andersen); 772 VHS and music dvds; a collection of uncatalogued LPs. Everything is on open shelves and may be taken out on loan.

Open to the public 19 hours a week; a total of 18 places for reading, consultation and study; bibliographic  information, viewing of VHS and DVDs.

30 day loans for books, 7 days for CDs and DVDs. Up to 5 items may be borrowed at one time. If not already booked by another user, the loan of an item may be renewed before either by telephone or e-mail the expiry date.

Suggestions for the purchase of a book the library does not possess, compatible with available financial resources and the library’s policy for purchase 

Activities for schools - Project: ‘‘La biblioteca fuori di sé’ (The Library beyond ) theme packs for play school, primary and the first year of secondary school.By request and in agreement with teachers, reading routes and   theme book choices. Presentation of books and readings are in schools. 

Further activities: the library organises activities to promote reading, fun and labs. for children and families. The library subscribes to the national project ‘Born to Read’ (‘Nati per Leggere’).


Other services offered in collaboration with the Quartiere

The library collaborates on and takes part in the project ‘The Library out in the park’ (‘La Biblioteca a spasso nel parco’) included in the Pact with the Quartiere: readings aloud, workshops and picnics in the parco dei Tigli (Lime Tree park), ‘Leggere il Natale’ (‘Reading Christmas’). Readings and workshops in the library during December, ‘Al Borgo Incantato’ (In the enchanted village), a theatre festival for children 2012, 3rd. edition, in collaboration with the theatre group ‘Le Ombre’ (The Shadows).

The offices of Quartiere 8, the civil registry and municipal police are on the ground floor.
