Rossiniís house

Casa Rossini
Interno Casa Rossini

The building
Gioachino Rossiniís birthplace is historic. The ground and first floors were built during the fifteenth century, the second and third storeys are later additions. The greater part of the front and interior were restructured during the early decades of the eighteenth century. Gioachino Rossini was born here on February 29th.1792 where he spent the first years of his life with his family. The Municipality bought the building in 1892, a hundred years after the composerís birth; the house was transformed into a museum and declared a national monument in 1904. The building was restored in 1988-í89, the structure consolidated and exposition reorganised along scientific lines.

Collections
The exhibits are the fruit of various donations to Pesaro, for the most part dating back to the close of the nineteenth century. The largest collection came from Paris, donated by a great collector of Rossini memorabilia, Alphonse Hubert Martel. This collection consists principally of prints, engravings and lithographs connected with the life and operas of the composer. The collection also includes numerous official portraits of Rossini and whole series of singers who contributed to the success of Rossiniís operas in France.

Ground floor: prints
On the ground floor is an exhibition of prints showing the interpreters of Rossiniís late operas, among them some of the most famous opera singers of the nineteenth century: Adelina Patti as Rosina (The Barber of Seville), Giovan Battista Rubini as Othello, Giuditta Pasta as Tancredi, Gilbert-Louis Duprez as Arnold (WilliamTell). There is a small room in the basement where visitors can watch projections of some of the more recent Rossini Opera Festival productions.

First floor: portraits
On the first floor is a gallery of about 30 prints, portraits of Rossini in chronological order from youth to old age. In the room of the Ďlast daysí, spent at Passy near Paris, hangs Gustave Dorťís drawing of the composer on his deathbed. This section also includes an entertaining collection of caricatures, among them a terracotta statuette by Jean-Pierre Dantan, making fun of Rossini and other characters from the 18th. century musical world. Lastly, in the room devoted to music is a fortepiano, a keyboard instrument built in Venice in 1809, and some of the composerís manuscripts.

Bookshop
Casa Rossini bookshop offers a wide range of wares for every pocket, all concerning the ĎSwan of Pesaroí: magnets,  pencils, postcards, t-shirts and shoppers, silver and hard-stone jewels. There is also a vast selection of ceramics created by local producers expressly for the museum: a porcelain statue by Franco Bucci based on the caricature of Rossini by Jean Pierre Dantan, cups great and small, bells, jewel cases, and Ďsaucersí by Claudio Sora each devoted to one of Rossiniís operas for the delight of collectors. Music lovers will find a selection of Rossiniís works on CD and DVD, not only the best known, but also such rarities as an arrangement of Semiramide for guitar solo.
